Screen printing is one of the most popular and durable methods for applying logos and designs to T-shirts. Known for its vibrant colors and long-lasting results, this technique is the go-to choice for brands, events, and promotional merchandise.
The process begins with artwork preparation. The desired logo is separated into individual colors, as screen printing requires a separate screen for each hue in the design. Each screen is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. The design for that specific color is then burned onto the screen using a UV light exposure unit, hardening the emulsion except where the design blocks the light, leaving a stencil.
Next comes the setup. The screens are aligned on a printing press, and the T-shirts are placed on a flat platen. Ink is applied to the top of the screen, and a squeegee is used to pull the ink across the mesh. The ink is forced through the open areas of the stencil and onto the fabric below. For multi-colored logos, this process is repeated for each color, with the printer ensuring precise registration to prevent misalignment.
After the ink is applied, the T-shirts move to the curing stage. The garment is passed through a high-temperature dryer, typically a conveyor dryer, which heats the ink to approximately 320°F (160°C). This curing process is essential; it bonds the ink permanently with the fabric fibers, ensuring the logo remains soft to the touch yet resistant to cracking and fading after repeated washing.
Modern screen printing often utilizes Plastisol or water-based inks. Plastisol is favored for its opacity and vibrant finish on dark fabrics, while water-based inks soak into the fabric for a softer feel. Regardless of the ink type, screen printing offers exceptional durability and color saturation, making it an ideal method for creating professional, long-lasting branded T-shirts.
